Bobby

September 04, 2010

The funniest, nerdiest dog in the world.

So this is Bobby. He doesn't like it when you stand behind him. He's scared of a lot of things.. like trash bags, water hoses, anything that makes a noise he's not familiar with. When he pees outside (away from the house) he does a hilarious foot kicking thing over and over, resulting in the person with his leash being covered in grass and dirt. He's really good at catching birds and squirrels and loves to bathe in the sun. He loves his "sister", our other dog, Jinju, and when she's lying down he makes sure to lie down with some sort of body part touching her. He's not good with new, unfamiliar foods. He piles all of the toys on top of each other because he's selfish. He pushes Jinju out of the way to get all of the attention, and when he gets realllly excited about something, he'll kind of nibble at your hand.

Pain

I definitely pulled my entire right trap from my neck to the middle of my back in pincha mayurasana in yoga this morning. It's such a strange feeling because I've been active my whole life and pulling muscles has never been a problem, but being on your head and on your forearms with your legs in the air and then squeezing your elbows together did something to the top of my back. I felt the pain instantly. My instructor did some crazy shit and made my neck crack both ways, popped all of the bones in my upper back, then jammed his thumb into my muscles. It helped, but it didn't. Now I have a towel with ice strapped to my back.

First week: done

September 03, 2010

I've completed my first week of classes and I could not be more thrilled! My Thesis professor is a woman whom I admire: MFA from Columbia, young and hip with a whole head of salt and pepper hair, slight accent (French Canadian/Spanish?), intelligence up the wazoo.. endless. I also have a teacher who will be Skyping (too Sci-Fi for me) with the class for the first 6 weeks because she's in some far off land exploring.

Then I have an old fart of a teacher who grew up in Baltimore and has a Baltimore accent who went to the army, was stationed in Virginia, would go to DC and spend hours in the National Gallery teaching himself "art history", worked as a paige in a library, decided to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy so went out West and worked on a farm, came back and went to Hopkins for philosophy, somewhere in there lived in France for a few years and knows EVERYTHING. The way he looks at paintings is amazing, with so much energy. More energy than anyone I've ever come across. How many professors do you know that pretend to be light and squiggle around in front of the class trying to bust into a paintings that have been scummbled as opposed to glazed? Amazing. Can speak all sorts of languages and is crude and says the F-word. Love it.

This is why going to a school that costs a bazillion dollars is worth every cent.

I leave you with this poem by William Butler Yeats titled Memory.

One had a lovely face,
And two or three had charm,
But charm and face were in vain
Because the mountain grass
Cannot but keep the form
Where the mountain hare has lain.

So long summer, hello September!

September 02, 2010

There's something about September that yells CHANGE (for me, at least). It's back to school season which means new things and new clothes, a new attitude and a new hope for the future. September is when I carry a new number with my name. September is fashion week and the gigantic September issues of our favorite fashion magazines. September is the end of flats and sandals and a time to put away that summer wardrobe and bring out the jackets and blazers and blouses and shooz! It is still blistering hot out, but when September 1st rolls around, it feels different. It feels like things are changing.

The thing with trying to be someone else..

is that by the time you get to that point, that person you're jockin' is wayyy past that. So you're just behind. And trying to be someone you're not..

I'll tell you some secrets

September 01, 2010

Many of you girlies shop at Forever 21. What you don't know is that a few people that came out of Forever 21 are now opening their own chain of stores that will soon hit your local mall within a year or two. They already have a dozen or two stores in California and it is a pretty good store.

Here's the thing with Forever 21: most of what you see at that store is manufactured in Los Angeles. It's hard to explain, but basically everything is available for buyers to purchase from vendors. The few people that came out of Forever 21 are doing their own thing with their own vision, from clothes from downtown Los Angeles, all of which are also available to buyers. My mother, who does purchasing for her own stores, can spot where these cute dresses are from and to my surprise in taking a peak at these new chain of stores is that I have a few of those pieces already, and many my mom has already ordered for her store, which will be arriving any day. It was fun walking around with my mother saying, "I want that," and her telling me she'll get it for me next week.

Except youuu don't know what store I'm talking about.

Since these people are coming out of Forever 21, I think the store will do well. It's less cluttered, purchased very well, their direction is clear and the merchandise is classy, simple, and solid. Although Forever 21 has been around for 25+ years, it's easy to say that I hate going in there because almost all of the buying is not my taste, at all. I think a lot of girls will find it refreshing to have a new place to shop that can offer a more adult style. No over-sized t-shirts coming off the shoulder with large prints or things with flowers and sequins and cut-outs.

What's even more interesting is that my uncle (who has a packaging business) is doing the packaging for these new chain of stores. So, not only do I get to have clothes at cost, but I can put my initials on the tag of every dress and soon all of you little girls will have a piece of me. Not only is it a great client to have, but as the store grows, my uncles business will also! Yay.

However interesting it is that I grew up in the downtown L.A. clothing world since I was little (because it is a huge Korean community), I do wish that my family was involved in Christian Louboutin manufacturing or Prada making/packaging or was The Yves Saint Laurent :)

Let's talk about..
