sandy zine-

All the photos in this zine were taken in lower Manhattan from Oct, 29 2012 to Nov, 2 2012—the days following Hurricane Sandy where a significant chunk of America’s largest city was without power. A $10 donation will get you this 52-page zine and help aid the recovery of many along our coast who are, still, without power and many now, without homes.

Please come by New York Adorned, Tuesday through Thursday, or PayPal payments can be sent to sandyreliefzine@gmail.com (there is a donation button on the left of [his] blog). Please include your shipping address, and $1 donations for shipping are much appreciated.

Limited quantities also avalible at Mast Books and Printed Matter.

All proceeds go to hurricane relief. If you would prefer to have your donation go to Occupy Sandy instead of the Red Cross please specify upon donating.

Excuse You

July 16, 2012

I don't care where you're from, how much you've had to drink, or who you are. When there's no room, there's no room. You're lucky I was sober.

As You Like It

June 26, 2012

This year marks Shakespeare in the Park's 50th anniversary. Evan, Evan's mother and I were very lucky to be able to see this year's performance of As You Like It (in amazing seats!) with a wonderful bluegrass score by Steve Martin. The Delacorte's outdoor theater was so beautiful in the 75-degree weather and one of those New York City must-do experiences that I was so happy to partake in.

Miss Lily's

Coconut cake and stout ice cream.

But before, we had steamed mussels, grilled corn with toasted coconut, jaquitos, jerk chicken with beans and rice and two pitchers of sangria (white and red).

Weekend

November 09, 2010

New York weekend was good. I went to The Whitney and The Met and had a chance to get to know my Thesis professor better. I only went into the city for the museum visit and spent the rest of my time in Brooklyn (thank God). Jake bought me an air mattress because he loves me so I was comfy all weekend. We watched Vampire in Brooklyn. I had an awkward run-in with an ex-roommate whilst doing some bar-hopping but she looks good. The Dude and I went to The General Greene for dinner Saturday night and got dinner at Hamilton Tavern when we got back to Baltimore. Food matters.

I understand that the above paragraph is kind of all over the place. Leave me be.

Pure Beauty

November 05, 2010

John Baldessari's exhibition, Pure Beauty, opened at The Met a few weeks ago. I saw the show when it was at The Los Angeles Museum of Art in the summer, and I'm interested to know how a huge show like that is installed in another location. I don't think I've ever been in two places where I could experience something like that. Soo I'll be in New York this weekend to see the show again (which was amazing in Los Angeles). It'll be up until January so I strongly suggest everyone and anyone to see the show.

In my own work, I've been really influenced by Baldessari. And with the show, I think it's important to read the text and understand, conceptually, the language of Baldessari and his work because his work is about language, whether it is through text, photos.. etc. It's strange being so inspired by someone who is still alive and vocal, which makes me feel like, for the first time, I am present in a legendary time. Which gives me chills, ya know? Is that being too romantic?

He's from California and makes work about California (among so many other things), which is important to me in my journey out here. It's inspiring and in looking at his work makes me feel like I'm "home". And maybe seeing his work in New York will give me a different feeling, in that we both are displaced and away from home. But what is home. And I don't think that one has to be "educated" and "informed" about "art" to appreciate Baldessari's work.

Have a great weekend and watch this 15 minute video.

Mm what to say

September 19, 2010

Right now, singing Gorilla Biscuits to myself, in my head.. but the slow jam version. What does that sound like? If you only knew..

The Dude and I went to New York Friday-Saturday. I did secret stuff and he did not-so-secret stuff involving his bicycle. He only rode for a day and spent Saturday with me and my fronz.

66Sick spot in Harlem. Made for The Dude. Seen on dahstreets.blogspot.com.

Friday, Beau and I ate in Chelsea and I got the yummiest grilled pork chop with a red beet salad. It gave me indigestion and gas all night. He's been pretty exhausted with Fashion Week so we stayed in--Pinkberry and movies. When I go up to New York, I always bring gym clothes and running shoes. Even if I'm only in town for 30 hours, I go to the gymmy. This time, however, it wasn't just the gymmy, it was Soul Cycle. Apparently it's New York's newest and biggest craze. "Spritual cardiotherapy," "Cardio party," ".. as much of a go-to place as the Monkey Bar." Basically, it's a spinning class for yuppie Manhattan ressies that love New York and love working out.

Imagine: 60 stationary bikes in a studio in TriBeCa, so close together you can hug the person next to you. Dim lights, loud music, a completely steamy mirror that you can't see yourself in, an overtly energetic instructor on a mini-platform with her laptop to pump up the jams. It's all there. 45-minutes of a possible heart-attack if you take it there. The instructor, that I might have a steamy night with, encourages you and sings along to U2 and gets off the bike dancing through the isles, yelling at you to Take It There. And, to top it off: Empire State of Mind to remind you that you are living in New York City and there is nothing like it. Fists pump, hoots are hollered, and there's sweat. Lots of it. You could be riding next to Rihanna's agent, Kanye West, a supermodel, Wall Street's top dog, or Tonne Goodman's assistant.. but it doesn't matter.. because all there is in that room is sweat, music, and energy. That's how your Saturday morning is started.

How's that description? Hilarious? Except I'm not joking, at all! Hahaha I'm lucky to get to experience things like that in New York. It's so surreal and yet I feel at home, as if IF I lived in New York, one day, this would be my life.

Ha.

Brunch in the West Village at the favorite spot, then off to Brooklyn.. womp womp. Familiar faces were seen, hung out with The Good Friend, then back to Baltimore. A little warmer, a little quieter, and a lot more comfortable.

Farmer's Market this morning, no yoga this week because.. and drinking coffee. Been sleeping better, but still, not the best. Missing a few people, knitting winter goods, and still cooking and baking. Life is so good. It's easy enough, and you've got a long time to live.

You don't know me.

Coney Island Cyclone! Why is my mouth open in EVERY PICTURE.

Did I mention that Kelly and Megan were in town? I took them to Carrie Bradshaw's apartment.

I'm used to it by now

June 06, 2010

Senior year, my date to the senior dance (not prom, seniors Only dance) puked on me during dinner.

Our group of friends decided to do some pre-gaming on the drive to the location of our event, which was located on top of a hill, over-looking beautiful Orange County. I remember there being a bottle of Grey Goose in the car and maybe some Bud Light, but an hour into the night, I was carrying my date across the floor while my entire senior class stared in shame.

I took him to puke over the railing, into beautiful Orange County, and we got some food and sat back at our table. My date could barely open his eyes and the next thing I know, he's trying to shovel his previous meal back into his mouth, splattering the goodies all over me.

The chaperones thought we were having a little too much fun and called the cops. We got breath-tests and did the follow-my-finger trick with the cop. I think 6-8 of us were called out and I was the only one that got to stay. The rest had to go home, parents were called, nights were canceled.

I stayed, Natalie and Cameron took me home. I still had a good time. I mean, how many times have you been puked on by your date?

A couple nights ago, the group and I did a margarita night at the studios. I forget how deadly tequila is to people. The next thing I know, our 25 minute commute is extended to 2 hours due to trains being re-routed and I'm carrying a grown man that can barely walk.

I've always been the one to take care of people, given any circumstance. Especially when there's a lot of drugs and alcohol involved. People heavily under the influence don't want to be patronized or treated like a baby. You do that, you make them angry and make it more difficult to get them to do what you want.

Maybe the people you hang out with don't get completely trashed, but all of the events in my life lead up to the other night. I'm exaggerating, but it's because the group of people in this program this year are.. angels. We've got a Christian schoolgirl, a Mormon girl, Aspergers, a virgin.. and no one knew how to deal with extra-drunk/slightly scary.

So New York. I never want to haul a drunk guy from Brooklyn for two hours ever again. And I never want to enter a 95 degree subway platform. However, it was interesting and another story to add to the list. Puke doesn't seem to phase me anymore.

Dear New York City,

June 04, 2010

You're making me tired. Hang out with this person, hang out with that person. Want to have dinner? Let's watch a movie. Studio studio studio. Coney Island! Cyclone! Nathan's! Nathan Williams. What?

I rolled two blunts yesterday. It's those little asian hands man. Don't worry, no smokage for me, so don't get excited Arj.

No sleep. Too much coffee. The painting is not working. What is art? "I don't understand how that's art." "So, do you just splatter paint on the canvas?"

My dude is sexy. Eww. He's also very strange, yet still sexy. And very nice. He's so nice! And has a nice body ;) Eww. Nice.

You craze

June 03, 2010

Sometimes, I think I can be Obsessive Compulsive about certain things, but when I realize I'm being that way, I try even harder not to be. I always think that's an even crazier form of Obsessive Compulsion, in that I'm so OD* about being controlling that I control my "OCD". Haha it's so silly (my theory, not OCD).

I spent close to 12 hours in the studio yesterday. We all spent the whole day together, which was a lot of fun. It was the first day we, as a group, did an all-day thing and ended the night with a couple beers. I took my laptop with me so I could watch Weeds while I waited for paint to dry. I'm almost done with the third season :) We have all come to love this convenience store called Bridge Fresh down the street which basically carries EVERYTHING. Sushi, burgers, veggie burgers, breakfast, Kombucha, beer, panini's, salads.. Everything. They have freshly squeezed orange juice and pudding, too! Yesterday I got a veggie burger with bacon (haha) that was soo yummy. I don't want to leave this place.
